Strategies for Success
- Encouraging economic development through collaboration with local and regional business organizations, assisting the start-up of new businesses, and providing advice and timely reviews for new development applications. This means working with our regional partners to build capacity and accommodate development in an economically and environmentally sustainable region.
- Establish a new corridor redevelopment program to address the priorities and goals of the Growth Plan to Half a Million. Land use, design, streetscaping, and transition to adjacent neighbourhoods will be important considerations. Success of this program is contingent upon intensification of properties that are impacted by previous land uses. A Brownfield Renewal Strategy will be included to articulate implications of impacted sites and define the role of the City in pro-actively facilitating development to achieve infill targets.
- Implement a new BID – Urban Design Council Policy to formalize the relationship between the City and BIDs with respect to communications and priority maintenance.
- Develop a 4-year action plan to increase online delivery of programs and services within the Building Standards division with a focus on alignment with Service Saskatoon.
- Service the Southwest Industrial Area, 23 acres of industrial land. A further 80 acres will be serviced in future years in the Marquis Industrial area.
- A total of 22 acres of multi-family/mixed use land will be serviced in 2017, with a further 2 acres in 2018, and 33 acres in 2019.
- 10,775 licensed businesses are operating in Saskatoon, contributing to 1.1% growth rate since 2015.
- Since 2007, the Planning and Development business line has added 17 new services and expanded the scope of 16 existing services to meet the demands of one of the fastest growing cities in Canada.
- 3,950 building permits were issued in 2016, with a combined total of $727.6M construction value.
- Although the amount of waste that was recycled increased, waste going to the landfill increased by 6.4% in 2014.
- The amount of garbage collected per home in 2013 was 0.95 tonnes which is almost 50% more than the national average.
- In 2013, the City of Saskatoon’s corporate GHG emissions was 23.7% higher than the 2006 baseline, with the largest increase in the water and sewer sector. Reducing GHG emissions is challenging as City services increase to serve the expanding population.
