Information for Candidates

Civic elections occur every four years and by-elections occur when a vacancy occurs on City Council or one of the school boards. The next general election is in fall 2020.

Under The Local Government Elections Act, 2015 a person is eligible to be nominated and elected for city councillor if the following are met:

  • Is at least 18 years of age on the day of the election
  • Is not disqualified pursuant to this or any other Act
  • Is a Canadian citizen at the time that he or she submits the nomination paper
  • Has resided in Saskatchewan for at least six consecutive months immediately preceding the date on which he or she submitted the nomination paper

An individual is disqualified from being nominated or elected if he or she is

  • A judge of any court
  • An auditor or solicitor of the municipality


An Election Sign is a temporary sign/poster designed or intended to be displayed in connection with the following:

  • federal election or referendum;
  • provincial election, referendum or plebiscite;
  • local government election; or
  • a Health Authority election.

The  Election Sign Guide provides an overview of the regulations on election signage including sign placement, duration and other standards such as size and height.  Regulations on election signage are outlined in the Zoning Bylaw 8770Temporary Sign Bylaw 7491Poster Bylaw 7565 and The Local Government Election Act, 2015.  The purpose of the election sign regulations is to create a reasonable balance between communicating for election purposes, reducing sign clutter, and keeping our streets safe.
